How to choose between shared hosting, a VPS and a game server

June 24, 2026 · by The Vastrox Team

If you are launching something online, the first decision is which type of hosting you actually need. Pick wrong and you either overpay for power you will not use, or hit a wall the moment you grow. Here is how to choose, in plain English.

Shared hosting: the simple starting point

With shared hosting, your website lives on a server alongside other sites, all managed for you through a control panel (we use DirectAdmin). You never touch the operating system, updates are handled, and you get email, databases and one-click app installers out of the box.

Choose shared hosting if you are running websites: a blog, a business site, a portfolio, a small WooCommerce store, or a handful of client sites. It is the cheapest, easiest option and it is all most websites ever need.

A VPS: your own server, full control

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) gives you a dedicated slice of a server with guaranteed CPU, RAM and NVMe storage, plus full root (or administrator) access. You choose the operating system, install whatever you like, and tune it however you want. With that power comes responsibility: you manage updates and security yourself.

Choose a VPS if you need to run custom software, a heavier application, a staging environment, a Discord bot, a small SaaS, or anything that outgrows shared hosting. Pick Linux for most web and developer work, or Windows for ASP.NET, MSSQL and Remote Desktop.

A game server: built for players

A game server is purpose-built to host multiplayer games like Minecraft, Rust, Palworld or ARK. You get a game panel with a live console, one-click installers, mod and plugin support, and high-clock CPUs tuned for the way games actually run, all with DDoS protection included.

Choose a game server if you want to run a server for your community without wrestling with a raw VPS. Everything is set up for the game, so you can be online in under a minute.
